Staphylococcus epidermidis

General Information

  • Vancomycin

  • May consider adding Rifampin for infections in prosthetic material

Staphylococcus epidermidis is a coagulase-negative species (CoNS) of Staphylococcus.

It is part of the normal human flora, typically the skin flora, and less commonly the mucosal flora.
S. epidermidis is not usually pathogenic, but patients with compromised immune systems and those with catheters and surgical implants are at risk of developing infection.

  • Hospital-acquired infections

  • Bacteremia, meningitis and pneumonia in NICU patients

  • Catheter associated infections

  • Infection in prosthetic material

  • Endocarditis (particularly in those with abnormal heart valves)
