Streptococcus anginosus group

General Information

Gram positive cocci in chains, facultatively anaerobic, variable hemolysis.

Smells like butterscotch.

Streptococcus anginosis group includes S. anginosis, constellatus, and intermedius

Normal oral/GI flora.

Consists of S. anginosus, intermedius, and constellatus.

Used to be called S. milleri group.

Women's Health: Has been associated with intra-abdominal/ abscess and tubo-ovarian abscess formation. Has been isolated from blood cultures of women with fever in labour/chorioamnionitis

  • Abscesses - intra-abdominal, hepatic, cerebral, empyema

  • Bacteremia

  • Rarely endocarditis

When these organisms grow in blood culture, look for the abscess.

Generally abscesses need surgical drainage depending on size/location.
